  • Looking for a hilarious, fast-paced youth group game that requires nothing more than a few chairs and some quick thinking? Who Sir, Me Sir? is a crowd favorite for middle school and high school youth groups. It’s perfect for getting students laughing, learning names, and staying alert — whether you’re indoors or outdoors.

Overview

Who Sir, Me Sir? is one of the best youth group games or church team-building activities for large groups. It’s fast-paced, funny, and easy to learn!

Ideal # of Participants: 8 or More

Where to Play: Indoor / Outdoor

Age of Participants: Middle School / High School

Approximate Time to Play: 10 to 30 Minutes

Materials Needed: One chair per person

How to Play Who Sir, Me Sir?

Line up one chair for each person in your group and let everyone pick a seat. The person on the far left is seat number one, the person next to them is seat number two, and so on all the way down the line. The goal of the game is simple: get to seat number one and stay there.

This is a call-and-response game that mixes storytelling and fast reflexes. When the leader says a specific line, one player must respond quickly — and correctly — or they’ll move to the back of the line.

Here’s how it works:

  1. The leader begins with a story about the king losing something and accusing one of the players.

Leader: “Once upon a time there was a king who lost his favorite royal robe. He believes it was number six. Number six, you are under arrest.”

  2. Before the leader can finish their line, player number six must interrupt with:

Number six: “Who sir, me sir?”
    Leader: “Yes sir, you sir.”
Number six: “No sir, not I sir.”
    Leader: “Who, sir, then, sir?”
    Number six: “Number four, sir.”

  3. The leader immediately begins to “arrest” number four, and number four must interrupt quickly — or else move to the back of the line!

If a player doesn’t interrupt in time or messes up a line, they go to the last chair, and everyone else shifts forward. Seat numbers move with the chairs — not the players — so moving up changes your number.

Set a time limit and see who ends up in seat number one when time runs out. That player is the winner!

Tips for Success

  • During the first few rounds, write the lines on a big sheet of paper so everyone can follow along.

  • Start off slow and forgiving — then increase the speed and tighten up the rules as the group gets more confident.

  • The faster the pace, the funnier and more chaotic this game becomes!

Youth Group Lesson Tie-In

Who Sir, Me Sir? is a great way to talk about accountability, leadership, or integrity — how sometimes we’re quick to deny responsibility or blame others instead of owning our actions. After playing, you could discuss what it looks like to take responsibility in faith and friendship.
